are we all tired of the *artist returns after number years in obscurity* headline yet? because michna sure is. nearly seven years following the nyc dj/producers debut album for ghostly, magic monday, he has finished the official follow up to that record, but adrian yin michna doesnt want to overstate what happened in the interim. *life just moves,* he starts casually, *there has been a lot going on.* dj gigs, music production for video games and commercials, and film scoring have kept him busy, along with a healthy balance of painting, biking, and other non-musical endeavors. in light of michnas sophomore lp, thousand thursday, though, it all seems beside the point. simply put, his latest record is a celebration of the producers love for vibrant electronic music, bothering very little with conceptual or contextual baggage.

the third release published by the vfmm, this time teaming up with the befriended label kashual and its mastermind - a brother from a different mother - thome thomp from berlin.the record encompasses a broader scope of electric music productions and still clings to the love and passion for analogue hardware.on side a of the record we again are lucky to present another bizarre yet gripping voodoo stomper by our very beloved bufiman. we are also very excited to welcome the very debut of a rather talented and promising project called forum whose uncompromising and raw acid sound is tearing every dance-floor to bits.the flipside kicks off with a very deep-laid and mellow analogue soundscape produced and arranged by the renown and ingenious rvds. utterly hypnotized by this track, the listener will then be caught and dragged down by the harsh and very stark atmosphere of the fairly industrial but emotive techno production of our mate thome thomp.you all are advised to keep an eye out to this record as it will be gone very quickly.

brighton s ever-cultured black key label pushes on with another house connoisseur for its next release, namely the venerated scotland-based deep house producer brad peterson. opening up the ep is -monsoon- a nice and propulsive house jam that journeys through deep space with infectious drum hits and radiant synths fleshing out the rubbery groove. -sit back- is a more reflective and sombre cut, with wallowing, liquid chords draped over a ponderous, snaking bassline. the classy, cultured work continues on closer -cloud remedy- with its reverb coated hits, decisive drums and carefully spraying, ever shifting synth patterns. classic but not overly reverential of the past, it s a beautifully musical bit of deep house with gently tumbling, starry night sky melodies to die for.

san francisco-based dj/producer nick monaco has long been part of the soul clap family, releasing his first 12- on the label back in 2012. mating call, a double 12- set running at album length, is easily his most expansive release yet. it s typically eccentric, delivering a range of songs - featuring his own distinctive vocals - that blend numerous styles whilst retaining a loose, funky and altogether rather kaleidoscopic feel. it s rooted in balearic pop, but also touches on dub, deep house, boogie, dub disco and a strangely deep and contemporary take on the triple-beat rhythms of glam rock. it s hard to accurately describe, but is really rather good, certainly, it s one of soul clap s strongest releases of recent times.

finally the moment has arrived for us to release new original music on our own label! this monster release has a history that takes us back more than four years to a 48 hour studio session at our beloved marcy hotel in brooklyn, ny. the original collaborative effort came from a laundry list of familiar crew love players including soul clap s charlie and eli, wolf + lamb s gadi mizrahi, no regular play s greg paulus, the lovely deniz kurtel and even mr. fantastic himself, lee curtiss. after all was said and done the body and inspiration of the record was there but what was lacking was a strong vocal. enter robert owens, arguably one of the most prolific and sonically recognizable singers in house music period

heavy release from newcomer therarelowry on the soft rocks kinfolk imprint. nightshift is a meandering acid tinged trance-dancer with a nord-esque bassline under pinning it. the morning after goes on a heavier route but the mournful strings keep it on the light side of the dark with great intensity. on the flip side soft rocks take the nightshift into their specially designed acid fuzz room to deliver a pounding percussion filled remix....all trax are receiving support from the alfos duo of andrew weatherall and sean johnston.

following his appearance (albeit in remixed form) on the debut 12- from keyboard masher s pleasure unit imprint, norwegian eccentric skatebard is given the honour of releasing the label s second ep. apparently all three tracks are vintage cuts from the archive, previously unheard but original recorded straight to tape in his home studio. there s naturally much to enjoy, beginning with the scandolearic-goes-rave synth-house madness of -react 2 rhythm- - all urgent, swirling beats, epic synthesizer melodies and mid- 90s us garage influences. there s more surging, nu-disco goes-house fare to be found on -it goes on & on (the bassline)-, while -pingu- is a joyous chunk of chugging scandolearica blessed with tactile shaker percussion and a jaunty, rock solid synth bassline.

it often said that all good things must come to an end, but it s especially satisfying when that end is a real high note. wed like to think thats the case with icee hot, as its five- year run as a party and a label is coming to a close this month, both with a 28­hour marathon goodbye event and with daddy issues, the latest ep from vin sol & matrixxman.

after releasing three eps in 2014 to great feedbacks such as standing up house music label, this january 2015 sound of vast is about to hit its 4th release with an even greater selection and range of house music. this new ep has a very unique sound, which is the result of sierra sam and pascal hetzel - two of berlins most talented music producers - collaborating to make something a bit different from their usual style. they wanted to make something dirty but organic.

the debut release on office recordings is the first part of a series produced by label founder baaz. in my mind is a subtle, shiny piece of jazzyfied house music with a steady rolling groove and dirty kickdrum. glim bangs the box with deep dubs and a sexy vigorous groove. the flip starts with two mind bending downbeat cuts with a stumbling beat. last but not least a slowburning remix of way out citti by matthias reiling (sessionn victim, giegling recordings) and björn astrup who did a brilliant job twisting the original into a soulful homage to the slow side of house music.

new label from brooklyn s nathaniel jay, also known for his love revolution label, and his work as half of soho808. original music by casey tucker, whose recent releases on boe off-shoot, for those who knoe, inspired jay to seek him out. on remix duties, italys underground don, nick anothony simoncino, of l.i.e.s., echovolt, skywax, quintessentials, and his own label, hotmix, to name but a few. nathaniel is promising big things for his new love notes imprint: this is going to be the best thing ive ever done. we ll take him at his word until he gives us reason not to.

today gregor returns home with two slamming new tracks, both of which are the result of hours of tweaking and testing whilst on the road this summer. midas is built around a stripped back single-riff groove. minimal elements and maximum effect show that gregor still has that midas touch. on the flip and easily living up to its name is disturber. its snarling synth takes centre stage, intimidating and unsettling. but as the kick drum thumps and the intensity builds, disturber suddenly returns to the dark shadows.

following the success of its first release by the ever elusive jason grove, the vinyl-only sub-label skylax extra series returns with a little something beyond special. for those house-heads in the know, the man needs no introduction, but for those uninitiated, sit back and prepare for this double 12” selection to further your education in house music.joey kay hails from chicago in the us and has influenced a great many producers in the last two decades with his signature take on the deep house sound. he keeps things simple in the best possible sense of the word, stripping back tracks to their bare essentials in order to maintain what the spirit of house music is all about: the groove, the soul and the feeling of being carefree, even if only experienced for a few minutes at a time. there are no superfluous or ancillary sounds in joey’s music and this is all the more evident when taking a step back and listening to his spectrum of output in this collection, which spans more than twenty years of his career.

two sides from our favorite early 80s lover lew kirton. its the first time the sexy soul mans two track have been 45! both solid tried and tested lp tracks, but who wants to spin lps. 15 years of doing a club every week and you end up with some secret weapons, *something special* was always a big tempo change record. everyone is tired from dancing for two hours to fast disco, modern and deepfunk and without warning you just drop this badboy in take it down a notch and let the dry riding commence, solid. on the flip is lews straight up jack of gloria gaynors *i will survive*, pure shameless anthemic dancefloor disco smasher that i have championed for years, that catchy guitar line over lews big voice never tires.

at the tail end of the 90s, gregory darsa played around with a number of pseudonyms before finally settling on his now familiar dj gregory alias. one of those abandoned aliases was headcore. it was used for a single ep back in 1998, released on chateau flight s label, versatile (then in it s infancy). here, that ep gets a welcome reissue. it s aged rather well, with all four tracks - explorations of deep house themes with occasional nods to the dubby, african-influenced style darsa would later explore on the africanism project - sounding as fresh now as they did 16 years ago. picking highlights is tricky, but we re particularly enjoyed the sparse, swinging dub-house of -cage- (accompanied with a tasty drum dub) and the chez damier-influenced chug of -in & out

federsen returns to fifth interval for another sublime instalment of dance floor friendly dub-techno. dewpoint is an altogether tighter affair when compared to the label s first release, point reyes. the drums are taut and razor-sharp, propelling the listener effortlessly through a dense fog of ferric clouds, swelling to fill the outer-reaches of the echo chamber. a highly polished metallic production style that can be compared to some of andy stott s early and classic works. tomas rubek remixes dewpoint for the b-side, remaining faithful to the original track s structure but viewing it through a tinted lens. dewpoint s chords become iridescent, kick drums fall into a straighter pattern and are backed by further dusty percussion, shifting the original into spheres inhabited by the likes of rod modell and fluxion.

wph kicks off 2015 with a new e.p. by the mighty luv jam from wales. living in a universe that is entirely his own andrew cole has cooked up two more of his ‘especially for wph’-tracks. one here at wph hq can only be flattered! ‘californian freestyler’ is the more peak time burner of the two, but ‘bmx bandito’ will not disappoint the more discerning punters out there either. on remix duty we find the main artist from our friends at uncanny valley in dresden, jacob korn. any work by jacob is always a treat and this here is no exception. flexing our digging talents we have also licensed a luv jam remix from the good people at panta rhei that was only released on limited 7”. we feel it deserved to be on a 12”, so there.

finally. a taster of what we have been waiting for a long time, four tracks from motorcycle boys upcoming album - squalo. with a quad of dancefloor ready tracks at your disposal this 12 has something for everyone. need to kick your disco-dance party into touch? no problemo! mutant house and dischord disco sit alongside girl friendly drum workouts and emo disco. its disco, but not as we know it. look out for squalo in the later part of this year, but dont miss your chance to get in on the action early. this 12 is not to be missed. did we say essential?

before dj gregory was point g. point g is an alias used by the french produced to explore a gritty, raw sound steeped in abstract vibes but with a very basic approach, which makes it all the more captivating making a strong impact on the underground scene in the 90s, point g gained much respect amongst his peers with timeless releases like the raw ep, on the raw again ep…. originals vinyl copies of many of point gs early tracks are notoriously hard to find, giving this comeback even more kudos.

our friends in moscow come through with a very special debut release on their new label! a various artists selection of esoteric but dancefloor assured edits, pieced together by passionate music lovers, champions of rarities and party starters in equal measure. all are part of a loose collective of moscow based music lovers, venue and record store owners. after digging deep to conjure up the bounty here, these enthusiastic diggers behind thats a steal are ready to roll out their debut - as ever, limited and ludicrously good. another all ears sureshot

the h.a.n.s. is back. with more tools for fools. four traxx and two extras for the soft working dj and the fast moving dancer. more samples, more nasty beats, more heavy stripped down kaputt groovers. weak kick drums, lazy arrangements & shameless sampling guaranteed. food for fun? maybe rooted somewhere between the early paul jacobs and the late bcc music starring a 2014 twist if you know what i mean. you better remember that h-ouse a-int n-othing s-erious. it is still nothing but big fun.

the km editions series, admirably helmed by the mysterious keyboard masher, has always been one of the more interesting re-edit/rework labels. past installments have touched on krautrock, disco, balearica, funk, italo and what can only be described as electronic oddities. this sixth volume offers up three more impressively remixed, overdubbed and reedited gems. theres naturally much to admire, not least the omd style woozy synth-pop of stolen shapes (stealing rework), which should tickle the fancy of anyone of a balearic disposition. the same can be said about the immersive, sun-kissed pianos and shuffling grooves of -astral playground. there s also a chunk of silly but, perversely, rather good french cod-reggae in the shape of le cod-, arguably our pick of a strong bunch.

albert van abbe has truly gained momentum this year with his new self-titled label vanabbe, a successful berghain live debut as well as releases on shipwrec and now trolldans. and you can tell! this trolldans release is filled with confidence and lucidity. the term ostinato refers to a continuously repeated musical pattern. its usually used in reference to classical music, but is well suited here. this ostinato, this stubbornness, gives the music a sense of pace and propulsion.

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…

believer, ellic, poluc - johnny d returns to nick curly & gorge s 8bit imprint with a major release! it s been a while since his last ep, but time only made him better. believer ep is a three track masterpiece and proof of johnnys keen eye for detail as well as his ability to transport a certain feel to the dancefloor. this unique symbiosis conveys into an organic touch and brings live to each production. get into the vibe! supported by raresh, deetron, steve lawler, dubfire, anja schneider, hot since 82, daniel bortz, mendo, sasha, noir, dj w!ld, patlac, daniel stefanik, mousse t, sidney charles, matt tolfrey and many more

we dont question the relevance of techno in the current musical landscape, but look back ten years or so and youll figure things were a little stagnant and uninspiring. the techno scene in berlin certainly did a lot to spruce new life in the genre and people like merbeck with his vault series releases were somehow pioneers of the industrial-influenced sound we now celebrate and take for granted. now landing on m_rec ltd. with a 3 track ep, the berlin resident fuses his aggressive sound with the hypnotic, dark-room elements that have defined the labels vision. m_rec ltd. starts 2015 with a nasty release: three tracks that fit any moment of a proper techno set.

christian viers is fast becoming a prominent name on uk underground house and techno circuits, either as part of lazlo dancehall alongside leon vynehall or his long running a1 bassline project. techno-focused releases on his own label, source unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed fina white resulting in the bad timing ep, which the label state is a strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction they plan to take moving forward. title track bad timing is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. without time is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst uk house veteran nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

ben sims presents the final (but first!) in his long-running theory series. over the years theory has presented us with some of the most essential house & techno releases on offer. sims unleashes four forward forward-thinking techno cuts for 050.1, headed up by a smoking remix from the bold marcel dettmann.

dj haus goes a little freaky on the helta skelta ep. this 4 track ep show his strangely funky side with some odd and jerky rhythms and melodies. it takes its cues from the windy city but doesnt hide dj haus roots in the uk with a bleepy techno twist and pirate radio energy.

informa experiments volume 2 continues with the same concept as the last, 4 artists submit a bank of sounds and from these sounds each artist composes a track. a simple idea that proves very effective. this time the contributors are claudio prc (prologue), takaaki itoh (wols), ben gibson (chronicle) & deepbass (informa) each version has come out very different but all have a beautifully analogous feel. deep, pulsing hypnotic techno. the release will be available on 12 inch only.

for a brief moment turin was italys sheffield, producing an astonishing number of diy electronic groups. in the context of a wider europe, italy has never been thought of as a hotbed of minimal electronic music, but mannequin records compilations danza meccanica: italian synth wave 1982-1987 have shone a light on a scene little heard, even within italys borders. but the history was still incomplete ... some new horizons now must be unveiled, showing that between the years of 1982 and 1984, the city of turin in northwest italy was home to a quiet underground renaissance of experimental electronic music.

polluted system is a track suitable for the main room, the energy of the kick and the bass leave no respite from start to finish as a joint of metal percussion and synths fit gradually to fill the sound spectrum of this track. becomes human machine in a few minutes, using acid and industrial sounds, conveys the idea of the change that is happening around us: people are becoming more and more machines, and this is the soundtrack of the mutation. unlocked human, while remaining in acid and mechanical territories, thanks to a groove of more organic toms and hi hat still let the human element glimpse, not yet deleted by the machines, all accompanied by a relentless kick which makes it a perfect tool from the dancefloor . no system, which give the title to the ep, ends this sequence with dreamy and futuristic atmospheres, the ruling part is still a simple but instantly recognizable acid bass, over breakbeat-oriented rhythmics.

born in the distinctively puerto rican neighborhood of lincoln park chicago, ricardo was named after legendary salsa singer ricardo ray. after major puerto rican displacement (urban renewal) ricardos parents settled in the noble square section of west town for many years. his music reflects a traditional house culture that goes beyond just sound or legendary stories. while his industry peers recite fond memories of the music box, the bismark and other musical institutions – ricardo sat in front of a big pioneer radio listening & recording mixes from chicago radio stations wrrg, wbmx am/fm & wgci which included a hefty dose of early house music, italian imports and electro. but, it was the new sound of chicago house that made a profound impact on his soul.
